In Year 8 History we've been learning about WWI, and what it was like for soldiers fighting in the trenches.

Many thought that the war would be over by Christmas, so when it was clear that the soldiers would still be fighting various governments organised for them to be sent Christmas packages. Many families in Britain organised packages for their loved ones fighting in the trenches.

Year 8's task was to make their own package to send to a WWI soldier in December 1914. They had to choose a minimum of three items, a message for the soldier and then explain their choices to the class.

The students went to a great effort to try and make very authentic packages. They thought very carefully about what they would include. Some made their own labels for items, and some students even baked biscuits to include.

We learned about some of the items they received prior to the activity as well as the issues they faced in the trenches. This helped them to make realistic choices.

Empathy tasks like this help students to put themselves in someone else's shoes. This is an incredibly important ability in order for us to understand mistakes of the past, and help to make a brighter future.

Merry Christmas from all of Year 8!

Mrs. Fleming
